I was born and bred in Cornwall but moved away to Portsmouth, Bristol & Bath for 13 years and came back in 2005. I now live and work in the county as a fulltime illustrator - artist. I have been taking commissions for my paintings and drawings since I was a teenager. It was only in 1997 that I was commissioned by Hallmark Cards UK, that I started to work as a professional artist. Since then I have illustrated over 40 children's books, worked with a variety of clients and worked to a commercial brief for 16 years.
While feeling stuck in a commercial rut I decided in 2008 to do an MA in Illustration - Authorial Practice at Falmouth University. I did it two years part time and haven't looked back. It has been one of the hardest and most rewarding things I have done to date. I had to unlearn all the skills I had acquired throughout my education and my career, in order to get to the very depths of who I was as an artist. I had lost myself in the commercial brief and trying to find 'me' again was like pulling teeth, but I got there.
After graduating as a Master of the Arts, and with a new knowledge of working as an authorial creative, I felt a frantic energy to put everything I had learnt into the world as the new 'me'. It didn't work. It is only after a couple of years of highs and lows and perseverance and patience that I learnt where my new path was. It was Antidote. This title is a true representation of the feeling I have while making these marks, in response to my day job.
I hope the work speaks for itself and you enjoy looking through them.
Most of the frames for the an-ti-dote work are all handmade, hand stained and varnished, with an antique-white interior. The studio 5 work is framed by Eat Art in Falmouth and all antique white, hand painted frames.
